"It feels great to have clean teeth!" -Chris K

Teeth Cleaning at Corona Village Dental & Norco Country

Teeth cleaning is the professional cleaning you can only receive from a qualified dentist or dental hygienist. Corona Village Dental & Norco Country Dental's routine dental cleaning includes comprehensive scaling and polishing by our gentle and professional hygienists, at a reasonable cost as a preventive measure for your teeth and gum health.

We recommend that teeth cleaning be performed every six months to prevent excessive plaque build-up. Lack of cleaning allows the growth of plaque, which if left unchecked can lead to the various types of conditions involved in tooth decay and gum disease.

In most cases, teeth cleaning should take approximately 25 to 30 minutes at our office, and most patients say this time flies by very quickly. When you leave, your whole mouth will feel clean, fresh, rejuvenated and most importantly, healthy.

The important steps regarding dental cleaning are outlined in detail below.

Scaling

This is the removal of plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces. Various methods of scaling are commonly used in relation to the amount of plaque and tartar.

Your dental hygienists will perform some traditional scaling by hand, while using advanced technology such as an electric scaler which allows your teeth cleaning to be done in much shorter period of time. However, to achieve best results, electric and manual scaling are usually both utilized.

Ultrasonic scaling uses a machine called a Cavitron, which uses sound waves to remove plaque and tartar. Ultrasonic scalers can only remove approximately 50% of total buildup, so hand scaling usually follows Cavitron scaling.

As a precaution, those who wear a pacemaker cannot get ultrasonic scaling because the ultrasonic sound can interfere with the function of the pacemaker. Our new patient form asks if you're currently wearing a pacemaker, and Dr. Sam or your hygienist will be aware of any potential issues before your cleaning.

Polishing

This is the finishing touch of your dental cleaning.

There are two kinds of polishing typically used. Prophy jet polishing, or rubber tip polishing with Prophy paste. Prophy jet polishing works by spraying high pressured water mixed with baking soda paste onto the surface of your teeth. This powered water can wash away the residue and plaque, while the baking soda removes the stains and neutralizes the acidic conditions in your mouth. Rubber cup polishing employs a low-speed hand piece with a rubber cup tip mounted on the top that contains a polishing paste that is made of abrasive ingredients ideal for safely removing stains.

The amount of time needed for your teeth cleaning will depend on factors from plaque deposits, complication of dental restorations and your gingival health. People with more tartar and plaque buildup may take a bit longer than those who have relatively cleaner teeth.
